Eye strain occurs when you over-use your eye muscles. Any muscle held in one position too long will strain. When you concentrate on a task such as reading, working at the computer or watching television for any length of time; your inner eye muscles tighten up causing your eyes to get irritated, dry and uncomfortable. To give your eyes a chance to refocus, once or twice an hour, take a five-minute break from whatever you're doing.
Computers are the number 1 cause of eyestrain in the United States. According to OSHA on November 19, 1999, "Computer vision syndrome (CVS), defined as a complex of eye and vision problems that are experienced during and related to computer use, is a repetitive strain disorder that appears to be growing rapidly, with some studies estimating that 90 percent of the 70 million U.S. workers using computers for more than 3 hours per day experience it (CVS) in some form."
