Topamax ( topiramate )
Preventative Drug Remedy (by prescription)
See: Topamax Website
Unlike treatments you use at the start of a migraine, TOPAMAX works differently. It's a daily prescription medication that you take for as long as you and your healthcare professional decide you need it. While migraines can't be completely eliminated, TOPAMAX can help stop them before they start, so you can get fewer of them to worry about.

my dr. has tried to prescribe topomax to me, but i am very hesitant (twice she gave me the script but i didn't fill it)....i have heard too many stories about people feeling "out of their mind" literally! i am a nurse and i can't afford to be cognitively compromised. sorry you both had horrible experiences, but thanks for reaffirming my wariness toward that drug. it's better suited to treat seizures anyways....

I took this drug for about three months. I started at 25 mgs and worked my way up to 100 mgs a day over a 6 week period. When I first started taking this drug i had a lot of bad reactions to my normal migrain meds (fiornal) my heart was beating fast and i was breathing heavy for a couple hours after i first took it. For a while i wouldn't take any meds because because i was afraid to but after a few migrain attacks and sobbing because i hurt so bad i took my meds and didn't seem to have the bad reactions. So that did seem better after the first time. But i didn't see any reduction in the frequency of my migrain, the topamax seemed to make me feel worse. I was tired all the time, i had no energy, no motivation, depression i seemed to have more migrains... everyday i felt terrible. I stopped taking the topamax, i know you are supposed to wean yourself off them but i couldn't bring myself to take them. I didn't seem to have any bad reactions to this. I don't think i feel near as bad now that i am off of the topamax. It's not anything i want to try again.... now i just need to go back to my specialist and tell her i quit it and see what she says. On to the next drug! ohh well.....

I took this drub per my doctor for 3 weeks. After the first week I started getting severe pains in my kidneys. I went back to my doctor about this and he disregarded my complaint. Then I started to loose my mind...literally. After three weeks on this medication, I had paranoid-schizophrenia, severe depression, and anxiety attacks along with several kidney stones. I quit seeing the doctor who prescribe it due to the fact that he wanted to increase the medication...since it did not prevent my migraines.
I am not saying that Topomax is horrible, just beware of side effects. I did not read the side effects until after I started experiencing them. And don't ever let your doctor tell you that you don't know what you are talking about. You know your body better than they do.
After wheening myself off this medication it took me over a year & a half to recover and 6 months to stop passing countless kidney stones. -
