Is it a migraine or just a headache?

I've seen this question come across twitter a lot lately:  I've got this horrible pain in my head, is this a migraine?  While only a doctor can tell you for sure, there are some basic criteria for determining whether or not your headache is a migraine.

First, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Is this a throbbing pain?
  2. Is the pain greater on one side of the head?
  3. Is the pain moderate to high in severity?
  4. Is the pain made worse by movement or normal daily activity?

If you answered yes to any two of these questions, and you experience either nausea or sensitivity to light / sound, chances are you are experiencing a migraine.
